The 95-95-95 HIV programme by the WHO ensured that 95% of people in a country know their HIV status, 95% of those who know their status are enrolled on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and 95% receiving ART have attained viral load suppression. In Ghana, the programme still lags at 72-87-68. The Centre for Health System Strengthening (CfHSS) is partnering with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Association of Public Health Laboratory (APHL) to execute a project on “Evaluating the ABI 7500 for Quantitative Detection of HIV Viruses”.

The study is aimed at evaluating the above open PCR system to augment viral load testing using the current closed system gold standard, Roche COBAS AmpliPrep/TaqMan, in Ghana.

The project site for the study is the Ahafo Region, one of the country’s regions with relatively high HIV prevalence. The Asutifi North District Hospital where the ABI system has been installed is the main site for all project activities.

Three hundred (300) participants are expected to be enrolled unto the study.

It is anticipated that the study would be done between June 2023 to October 2023.
