As part of its ongoing collaborative actions to strengthen partnerships with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Centre for Health System Strengthening (CfHSS) paid a courtesy call on key leadership of the Service to discuss strategic priorities and planned activities for 2026.
The engagement included meetings with the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, and the Head of the Clinical Engineering Unit, Dr. Nicodemus Gebe. As part of the visit, the CfHSS team also visited the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL), a key player in CfHSS’s planned activities for 2026.
CfHSS has, over the past five years, received support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement and strengthen health system under the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). This longstanding partnership has contributed significantly to improving Ghana’s preparedness, detection, and response capacities for public health threats.
The meeting provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions on plans and activities for the year ahead. Key areas discussed included capacity-building trainings on the safe use and maintenance of Biosafety Cabinets, strengthening of the sample referral system, and efforts to expand genomic sequencing capacity in Ghana. Support for preparedness and response to outbreaks caused by priority pathogens was also highlighted as a critical focus area.
The engagement was highly successful, fostering open dialogue, shared perspectives, and constructive discussions on how to further strengthen laboratory systems and public health preparedness in Ghana. It reinforced the importance of coordinated efforts between CfHSS, the GHS, and development partners in advancing national health security goals.
